How payment works with the smart cash drawer.
You choose Cash as always. The POS sends the amount to the machine, the customer puts the money in, the machine gives back the change and, once it confirms the payment, the bill is paid.
The customer pays at the machine.
They put the notes or coins into the machine. Meanwhile, the POS waits on “Collecting at the drawer…”.
The machine gives the change.
It counts what goes in and leaves the change in the tray. Nobody has to do sums in their head.
The bill is paid on its own.
When the machine confirms the payment, the POS marks the bill as paid and records the payment as “Drawer”.
The POS only marks the bill as paid when the machine confirms that amount.
You decide who can skip the machine.
By default, all cash is taken through the drawer. Only staff with the permission can take cash by hand, for example if the machine stops.

What is a smart cash drawer?
It’s an automatic payment machine for cash: the customer puts in notes and coins, the machine checks the amount, keeps the money and gives back the change. Connected to Food&Service, it receives the amount of each bill from the POS and confirms the payment back.
Which cash drawers work with Food&Service?
We confirm it before installing: we check your machine’s model, where it goes, the power and the connection. If you don’t have a machine yet, we’ll advise you in the demo.
Can I still take cash by hand?
Yes, anyone with the “Force manual charge if an integration fails” permission. By default cash goes through the drawer, and you choose who on your team can take it by hand, for example if the machine stops.
What happens if the machine doesn’t respond?
The POS tells you the drawer isn’t responding and lets you retry. If the payment isn’t confirmed, the bill isn’t marked as paid: money that hasn’t gone in is never counted as collected.
Can I split the bill and take one part at the machine?
Yes. You split the bill by amount, by item or in equal parts, and each cash part is taken at the drawer like any other payment.
Can I take payment from a phone?
Yes. The checkout screen is the same on the tablet, the computer and the phone, so the waiter can send the payment to the machine from wherever they are.
Will it put an end to cash discrepancies?
It helps a lot: the money doesn’t pass through your team’s hands and the machine gives the change, so there are fewer mistakes when taking payment. Even so, we don’t promise zero discrepancies: it also depends on how your venue works.
